The Geo/SAT Teacher's Manuals are a component of the Geo/SAT project and are designed for use with the Scholar Series Data Sets and PEDAGeOG. Five manuals are available.
Involves students by dividing the class into different groups representing the Chamber of Commerce, Planning Office, Conservation Organizations, Recreational Industries, and Public Utilities. Each group uses the data and the software to support its interests in determining appropriate land use. The Manual also contains the following topics: wetland concepts, wetland instructions, wetland values, wetland management, further readings, and notes for teachers.
Contains nine lessons covering the situation, location, land cover types, distance, surface temperature, area, fire situation, and potential actions. There is also a vivid illustration of "seeing through smoke" using a non-visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Contains information on the study area (physical characteristics, Al Jubayl, pre-war conditions, 1991 Gulf War), enhancing the images, and finding and measuring the oil slicks.
Relates to the great 1993 flood in the Upper Middle West section of the United States and deals with two data sets, one from 1988 (pre-flood) and one from 1993 which cover the area just north of St. Louis. It involves comparing the non-flooded 1988 scene with the flooded 1993 scene and estimating the amount of land flooded.
Includes thorough background material with lessons on the area surrounding
the site, the reactor, and consequences of the accident.
All manuals also include the following topics: remote sensing overview, historical summary, spectral data and images, geographic concepts and instructions, environmental concepts, and software instruction. Each is designed to integrate with the Scholar Series digital satellite data and the PEDAGeOG image processing software.
